Choose semi-custom when your kitchen has ordinary walls and you want a few changes to sizes, depths or finishes from a maker’s catalog. Choose custom when the room has unusual dimensions, a sloped ceiling or built-in features that no catalog box will fit. The terms describe how the cabinets are made, not how good they are, so a well-built semi-custom line can outlast a poorly built custom one.

The same criteria, side by side

Semi-custom and custom cabinets compared on the same criteria
Criterion Semi-custom Custom
How it is made Factory-built from a maker’s catalog of boxes Built to the drawings for your room
Sizes Catalog sizes with a published set of adjustments Any size the room and construction allow
Finishes and styles A large but fixed menu of doors, stains and paints Open-ended, including matching an existing piece
Waiting time Shorter, because boxes come from an established process Longer, because each job is drawn and built once
Changing your mind Easy until the order is released, then locked to the catalog Possible during drawings, costly once cutting starts
Later repairs or additions Reordering a catalog item is usually straightforward Matching a one-off door or finish depends on the maker

Which kitchens suit which choice

Likely better fit by kitchen situation
Your kitchen Likely better fit Why
Square room, standard counter heights, finishes from a standard menu Semi-custom The catalog covers the room with a few adjustments
Sloped ceiling, an odd wall angle or a wall that is not square Custom Boxes can be built to the actual lines
Tall or deep storage that must match an existing piece Custom Dimensions and finish can follow the original
A tight schedule with a clear plan Semi-custom The process is shorter and more repeatable

What to ask about quality

The cabinet industry’s trade association says its A161.1 Quality Certification means the cabinets have passed tests of structural strength, drawer and door integrity and finish durability. Certification is a feature of a maker’s line rather than of the semi-custom or custom label, so ask any maker you consider whether the exact line you are pricing carries it, and treat the answer as one input beside the construction details in the bid.

Questions to put to each bidder

  1. Which maker and which line are in the bid, and is every cabinet from that line?
  2. What are the drawing and approval steps, and what happens to the schedule after you approve?
  3. Who measures the room, and who is responsible if a delivered cabinet does not fit?
  4. How are fillers, end panels and trim priced, since they close the gaps a catalog cannot?
  5. What does it take to match a door or finish later if you add a cabinet?

A Catalog Fits Ordinary Rooms and Drawings Fit Unusual Ones

Start with the room: if the walls and heights are ordinary, a catalog with a few adjustments usually covers it, and if they are not, the drawings are what you are paying for. Good Haus is a free matching service, not a contractor, and when you ask independent kitchen contractors for bids you can say which cabinet route you want priced so the bids compare.
